The Shakespeare's World Traveling Shirts
It all started with this one.
April or so, 1985: M. F. Knowlton and J. R. Jones were vacationing in Sarangkot, Nepal. Or maybe they were working on some kind of thesis, or researching the local recreational economy. Whatever.
They woke up one morning and realized they had both packed Shakes shirts, and decided to take this photo. If you squint really hard, or come to our store in the District and look at the real photo that's on the wall, you can just make out a mountain in the background. It's not Everest, but it's one or three mountains over. Jones and Knowlton themselves are standing on a big hill at an altitude of 652,987 feet or so. It's actually -20 F in the shade, but in the sun, they're getting by with shorts.
They generously donated the photo to us so that we could cover that hole in the sheetrock, and it's been snow-balling ever since.
