Shakespeare's Table Tents

Katie Sperry - Employee of the Month, April 2000

Every month Shake’s employees nominate and vote for one of their own to be Emp o’ Month. The winner gets one misprinted, reject Shakes T-shirt; a White Chip Macadamia Nut Cookie; a table tent full of balderdash to send home; and a $50 bonus.

In 1996, when Katie was 6 years old, her daddy bought her a pogo stick. She got real good at it. One day she jumped 2000 times in a row. "I just felt like it… I got going and didn’t want to stop!"

Two years later, when she was 15, her daddy was teaching her to drive. He took her to an empty parking and left her to drive around. And around, and around and around…after 4 hours she burned a whole tank of Chevron, two quarts of Valvoline, and twelve Frescas. "I just felt like it… I got going and didn’t want to stop!" Dad, at home watching the WWF, didn’t notice her gone. He got irritated at the price of those micro gas cans they make you buy at the quick shops. "$14.98 for this shard of polyurethane?!?!?!? What happened to the good old days when they loaned you one for free?? And where’s that one I forgot to return to the station back in ‘83?"

Now Katie, 26, works here. Last month she worked the counter open to close for 13-½ days straight. Somebody always wanted off, so she just kept clocking in, shift after shift. "I just felt like it… I got going and didn’t want to stop!" She racked up 112.75 hours in overtime, single-handedly blowing the labor cost for the place off the charts and completely eating up all the managers’ performance bonuses, before anyone noticed how long she had been there. "We just didn’t notice" said Jaydee, one of the managers. "She’s so cute, you know. She just fits right in."

Congratulations, Katie.
